Let’s Be Honest Mamas | Tips For Dealing with Sick Kids

There are a lot of things that come along with having a toddler I never knew about. One of those things is how much easier it is to get sick. We have had more viruses, colds, and bugs than probably any other year in our marriage. Although it may not just be due to having a toddler, or a weaker immune system due to pregnancy, I read online that this year was the WORST year for the flu since 2009. When Kacie Ellis of www.elementsofellis.com put together this month’s Let’s be Honest Mama’s topic, I knew it would be perfect and timely…

Work Life Balance

Earlier this week, I shared with you why I started blogging, with a little insight into where we are with it all. Another question I get asked a lot is how and when do I work. I feel like it’s a little ironic for me to write this because I have yet to figure it all out. I am actually sitting here planning for what work / life and two babies will look like when we have a newborn and everything changes again. So maybe I will end up revisiting this post again in a year and let you know what it…

Coffee Talk: 4 Years Later & Why I Started Blogging

We just celebrated our four year anniversary of starting The Southern Trunk, and I just want to say THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone who encouraged me to start this, to keep going, and to stay true to myself. To everyone who reads, whether you just started or you’ve been there since the beginning, I couldn’t do what I do and what I love without you. I couldn’t think of a better time to start a new series with you all then right now. I’ve been thinking a great deal on what is going on with “influencers” and social media…

Healthyish Loaded Potato and Cauliflower Soup

I don’t know if you remember the other day when I said that Cove loves to help me with everything around the house, but I seriously meant it. I use to work on dinner by myself. We’d jam out to music and I would cook while he would play with play dough, color, etc. But lately, he has wanted to help me do everything in the kitchen. I even try to wear him, because it’s hard to cook with one hand and a toddler on your every growing belly. I try to soak up ALL these moments. Even the hard and…

Prepping for Baby | Clean & Safe Laundry

I’m writing this just after getting home from the store to buy drawer organizers. When I tell you the nesting bug has hit HARDCORE, I mean it. Ha. I’ve had the sweetest little helper too. Cove has been so interested in helping me with laundry, cooking, and housework. It honestly takes like three times as long to do, or I end up having to go back and re-do a lot of it, but it has been sweet memories and time with him that I am soaking up. It’s also made me highly aware of what we are using to clean…

30 Week Update

So I’m actually 31 weeks as I write this post, but I was 30 weeks when we took these pictures. I can’t believe how fast this pregnancy has gone by and how we are just a few short weeks from seeing our little love. I am so grateful he is continuing to grow on track and everything looks healthy. Due to a toddler body slam and a small measuring stomach, I have been able to see him on the ultrasound much more than I expected this late in the pregnancy and it has been a HUGE blessing. This past weekend, my…

Inside Toddler Activites

The fact that it’s winter, and we can’t play outside unless we want to freeze had me trying to get creative on things to do indoors. Flu season has been terrible where we are, and so sometimes I like to play it safe and stay home, even though I am the kind of person who craves getting out of the house at least once a day. I love having a very active and hands-on learner, but it has honestly challenged me so much to think outside the box. I learned and played completely different when I was a kid. I…

What’s in My Diaper Bag for 2 under 3

I haven’t started packing my hospital bag yet, but I have been thinking about how I’m going to cram stuff for a toddler and baby into ONE bag. I felt like I carried way more than I needed to with Cove as a newborn, but I was always so worried I wasn’t going to have something. This time around I am grateful to be a little bit more laid back and more minimalistic in what we actually need. I have to say, out of the many different bags I’ve carried over the past 2 years, Fawn Design is my absolute…

Honest Motherhood | Preparing Myself

Before I write anything, I always pray it comes from a place of grace and what the Lord wants. I am under no assumption that everybody who reads this blog is exactly like me, with the same convictions and opinions, but I know that each one of us has a story to tell. Our story of miscarriage and a small part of my experience with postpartum has sparked conversations with women and mothers all over the world that I never would have imagined. I have been so encouraged by how the Lord has been able to connect so many people, and how…

Freezing Temps + 5 Random Things

It’s been freezing here the past two weeks so we are definitely having an actual winter here in Georgia, unlike years past. Just like most people, the cold weather makes me want to curl up in my pajamas and not do a single thing. I try really hard to stay motivated, because in the winter, it’s just so hard, ha. I recently received this sherpa jacket and it has been perfect for when we actually go out and brave the bitter cold. It is oversized, hooded and makes me feel like I am wearing a blanket. When Ian and I…

Playroom Update with Lorena Canals & How We Keep it Clean

You may recognize this space from my office post we did a few years ago. Pretty quickly after I did that space, I ended up staying home full time and pursuing blogging and felt like space would be better used as a playroom. It’s actually just a large landing pad/hallway upstairs in between the bedrooms and so I felt like it would get much more use that way. I kept the pink rug for a while thinking we would use it if we had a girl, but when we found out we were having two boys, I knew I needed…

Thoughts on Things | More Monochromatic Looks, Embracing Your Season and Products I’m Loving

Oh look… it’s me in another cardigan… haha. I guess since my pregnancies are a few months different from each other, I totally forgot about dressing myself in the winter. I wore dresses most of the time with Cove, but won’t work for January in Georgia. The temps have dropped to below freezing quite a few times, so layering it is. Since cardigans are something you can wear even when you aren’t pregnant, I felt they were better options to include in my wardrobe so I wouldn’t be investing in a bunch of maternity sweaters that I couldn’t ever wear…

2017 Reflections & Favorite Moments

Ian and I recently had dinner to celebrate his birthday and we started talking about this year compared to years past. It has honestly been a great year. Nothing crazy has happened, but we’ve just had some great moments and have learned and grown a lot. Compared to the hard but great years we had in 2015 and 2016, 2017 was a year of reflection, contentment, and growth. I am thankful for it. My favorite memories this year, in no particular order Being able to take a road trip across Canada with my family and having my grandparents meet Cove…

Freshen Up For The New Year

I have been in crazy nesting mode lately. It is actually kind of crazy how much I have been nesting compared to when I was pregnant with Cove. We took down all of our holiday decor the day after Christmas, the toy room was redecorated (more to come soon) and all of the closets have been cleaned out and reorganized.  I am actually really proud of myself because sometimes I can be a pack rat, but I cleared out carloads of stuff! Along with all the nesting, I got an early start on refreshing our bed linens too. January is…

Your Last Holiday To-Do List | Present Over Perfect

I probably should have posted this a couple weeks earlier, but here it is now! This year, I have talked a lot about a simpler Christmas. More minimal decorations. Fewer to-dos. Which I guess is why the title of this is a bit ironic. But with it being the week before Christmas, I thought I’d share with you a few to-dos that will make your life easier, less hectic and more meaningful. Stop buying presents and be present. Don’t worry about that last minute person who got you a gift and don’t worry about the stockings being packed to the brim.…

Easy, Yet Delicious Make Ahead Christmas Morning Breakfast

*This post is sponsored by ALDI. All opinions are my own. I am not quite sure why, but breakfast is so important to us. I have always been a HUGE fan of breakfast foods. Bagels, bacon, eggs, French toast… all of it. Ian and I both have fond memories of waking up on Saturdays to our parents and especially our dads making breakfast and eating together as a family. Before we even had kids, we talked about how fun it was going to be making pancakes and sitting and watching our little ones chow down on the bar stools. Fast…
