When Your Milestones Leave You Unsatisfied

I spent a lot of my time as a young girl waiting and trying hard to get to the real world. People would always say, “When you get into the real world…” And though I am blaming no one but myself, I had this idea that if I could only get to the “real world” my life would start. I don’t believe I am the only person with this idea though. I think that many of us have jumped from milestone to milestone and thought, “Is this it? Is this what it’s suppose to feel like?” It’s not that you…

Italy Travel Guide

It has been a dream of mine since I was in middle school to take a trip to Italy. I could never put my finger on why I loved it so much, but between the food, the history and the views, I knew it had to be wonderful. My husband knew about this dream, so when I graduated college and started working full time, he told me that we would always find a reason not to go or put it off, so lets do it now. And we did! We started planning in December for a travel date in May.  Even…

Trunk Show: Bizzy’s Boutique + Giveaway!

I sat across from Elizabeth at the coffee shop, and couldn’t help but feel her radiating joy. She has so much love for everyone she comes in contact with, making her beautiful inside and out. Not to mention she is incredibly talented. I have lived in my Bizzy’s Boutique headband for the past month. It is the perfect accessory for any outfit and works great with my messy bed head on the weekends. Plus her matching Mother-Baby headbands are enough to make anyone have baby fever. We’re excited to announce with this month’s Trunk Show, there is a special giveaway…

Our Love Story

If you don’t like sappy posts, I wouldn’t scroll any further… It is hard to share our love story without sharing how we first met. Circa 2006, Ian was playing in a christian rock band that would often come and play at my school for chapel. I remember sitting in the bleachers in the gym auditorium watching them play. My friends were all drooling over the lead singer and guitarist, while I was too focused on how cute the drummer was, shaggy hair and all. I loved how he sang with every song, and was so passionate about his music.…

Scott + Lily

Meet Scott & Lily. Lily is one of the most beautiful people I have ever met because her kindness radiates in everything she does. Over the years, they have been some of our best friends, so needless to say, shooting them was a lot of fun. We love getting to meet and talk with people about shooting their pictures. It gives us a chance to learn who they are, the things they like and what experiences have made them they people they are today. This helps us set up their sessions and get a better idea of how to capture…

The Truth

The truth is… I put off blogging for years. It has always been a dream of mine to start something on my own and to do something I was passionate about, but several things hindered me. I feared failure. What if I was terrible at it? What if no one wanted to read anything I had to say? Having a Type A personality led me to believe that starting The Southern Trunk was something I had no control over. It wasn’t something practical. I feared being egotistical. Social media has created such a perfect avenue for people to live out…

Tybee Island and Savannah – The Beauty of Love as it Ages

This past year was an unbelievably beautiful reminder of what love looks like as it ages. My parents and in-laws celebrated 25 years of marriage and my grandparents celebrated 60 years! If that is not a expression that love can last longer than the statistics show, then I don’t know what is. To celebrate my grandparents and their love, my family decided to rent a house in Tybee Island to visit the beach and Savannah, GA for the weekend. Having three generations of love all under one roof for the weekend was such a great reminder of God’s love for…

Puppy Love – Happy Birthday Chuck

I can’t really say I have ever been an animal person. We never had dogs growing up, and the one cat my family had was never really attached to me. So you can imagine when Ian asked if I wanted a dog, what my answer was. A few short months later, I found myself looking through the eBay pet ads for puppies. I would send Ian pictures of sweet puppies and joke with him about getting them until one day, he responded with ‘lets pick that one up.’ Totally against my risk taking nature, I told him ‘Okay! Lets go…

When it snows in Georgia

As you probably know, we don’t get a lot of snow in Georgia. And a lot of the time, we end up turning our pajamas inside out for a cold day with no precipitation. This year, snowpocalypse hit the south and we weren’t expecting it. My stomach was in my throat for about three hours as I attempted to drive home on the icy roads. I ended up pulling off the road and walking two miles to get home. Ian’s commute is about 50 minutes, but this day, it took him 7.5 hours to get home. We were extremely lucky compared…

What is The Southern Trunk?

When I was a little girl, I remember playing in my parents bedroom and being mesmerized at the huge trunk at the foot of their bed. As I got older, I asked my mom what was inside. When she told me, it was better than I could have ever imagined. Hundreds of love letters between her and my dad lined the bottom. Along with the letters were my first ballet shoes, a stuffed animal from when her and my dad were dating, pictures of my sister and I from when we were babies and special gifts that my mom had…

Merry & Bright – The perfect holiday party booth

Every year since we have been married, Ian and I have enjoyed hosting a small Christmas party at our house. We usually require for everyone to dress up some how and this year we thought we would bring back the Tacky Christmas Sweaters. Since we don’t do a white elephant or ornament exchange we create a small area upstairs to do a photo booth. In the two years we’ve done it, it has not failed to bring lots of laughs and holiday cheer out of everyone. This year. We took two hideously awesome green chairs from the Goodwill as our…

A Very Merry Christmas

Christmas is my favorite time of the year. Between all the parties, family, and cheer I also get to transform my home into miniature winter wonderland. When we started our family two years ago, I was really excited about decorating for Christmas. But when I actually started putting the decorations up, I realized it was more than just making your home look beautiful. It was about the memories and traditions that come along with it. I love to see how other people transform their home through the holidays. Each ornament or decoration has a special meaning or memory behind it.…

Nashville, TN

For a quick weekend getaway, Ian and I and our friends Jimmy and Jen decided to go to Nashville, Tennessee. Even though all four of us had lived in the south our entire lives, we had never been before. In my opinion, Tennessee is one of the most beautiful states and Nashville is a city you cannot miss! Here are a few pictures from our trip as well as some recommendations if you decide to take a trip yourself. For lunch the first day we stopped at The Pharmacy which has some incredible burgers and handcrafted sodas. Of course we…

Washington D.C.

I had the pleasure of going to a marketing conference in D.C. for work, and as a bonus Ian got to tag along for a mini vacation. I had visited D.C. with my parents when I was younger, but I was excited to go back and see the city with Ian who had never been before. We started the trip by seeing the White House and the National Mall. Since the weather was so nice, we walked mostly everywhere and bought Metro passes for the day if it was more than a few blocks. After the end of the conference…
